why: Madison, Wisconsin is just a beautiful, wonderful city with great spirit.
|
Solid State Quantum Computing Group at UW-Madison
explainer: The people I worked with in graduate school
why: I was lucky enough to be at the formation of the quantum computing effort at Wisconsin-Madison. Now Madison is one of the foremost places to pursue quantum computing and information in the country and in the world. That's because of great people.

Knights of Columbus in Madison, WI - Council 6568
explainer: Fraternal charity organization
why: You would never think that college guys at the number one party school in the country could do so much good work for the community but these guys do. I served as an officer for a couple of years in the group but feel guilty about not helping more. I blame the whole phd thing.

College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA
explainer: Where I went to undergrad
why: William and Mary was full of good quality people, and the physics department was very good. Williamsburg is not quite Madison though.
|
Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.
explainer: Where I went to high school
why: Gonzaga is an all guys Jesuit (Catholic) high school in the District. It's a much loved place and you can feel it in the buildings while you're there. I think a Catholic would call this the Holy Spirit but I think Love is just as apt. It's 175+ years old and when I was there you could tell. They've totally renovated the place and it looks all preppy now. You'll have to wait another 100 years to see the Gonzaga I went to.
|
Northern Virginia and D.C.
explainer: Where I grew up
why: I grew up in Northern Virgina. I call it the mecca now because so many people are flocking there; there are a lot of opportunities. D.C. has it's problems but it really is a beautiful city, especially in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. I'll probably end up back in the area eventually.
